This is a true story and it explains everything.
My stepdad was a drunken ass and used to hit my mom and me and my sister. I would try to protect them by making him mad at me instead, so he would hit me and not them. His favorite was using a belt to whip my ass. And he did it hard.
This was a pretty regular (at least twice a week) thing from when I was 8 years old until I was 19. When I was 8, I had to do something to get his attention. When he was screaming at my mom or sister for something, i would have to do something so he would focus on me. When I did that it made him even madder, and he would grab me and drag me to my room and whip me with a belt. His goal was always to make me cry. But as I got closer to my teen years, I tried not to give him the satisfaction of making me cry. So I learned to take the pain. That just meant he would whup my ass harder and longer.
It didn't take long before he knew what I was doing, always trying to get his attention when he was screaming at my mom. I didn't want him to hurt her or my younger sister. I did it every time he was mad to protect them. After a while he knew what I was doing and so did my mom. There were times when they were fighting late at night and I'd be asleep in my room. Other times he would come home from work just pissed off about something that happened and he would would be yelling and screaming and swearing as soon as he walked through the door.
